Óreiða – Demó II (2017)

Blistering winter paralysis

If there was something I missed about Icelandic black metal scene, then it was this 19 minute song that brings raw and noisy sound just like the nature itself. It pierces like a sharp wind burying the vocals deep under the frozen relief. The riffs, while being repeated the whole time, create in fact a great atmosphere as they cast a hypnosis upon a listener. Skilled pairs of ears and an experience in recognizing the richness in simplicity is required. The screeching lo-fi drone is later accompanied by synths with a mournful melody. Resembling of flutes or harmonica they support the everlasting beating which slowly fades away into a frozen abyss. Given such length, some would expect hearing more variation, but its primitive essence serves the purpose. 8/10
