Chihei Hatakeyama – Void XV (2018)

Guitar-based drone for a sudden loss

Have you ever been through dejection? And by that I don’t necessarily mean depression, but temporary states of anxiety and somber thoughts questioning your own existence. Hatakeyama’s new project feeds on these feelings and comes handy if you need a fitting/background music. Just by looking at the album cover, the infamous sea of trees Aokigahara crossed my mind. Compared to shorter songs – “lyra” and “Hercules”, which are rather domestic, humming drones – “Auriga” and “Andromeda” open up endless horizons and misty landscapes where the choir adds up to the spirituality.
This musician has some serious skills in making the minimal sound dwell in you long after the record has already finished. 8/10
